The UMaine hockey unbeaten streak ends at nine games after a 5-3 loss at Northeastern Friday night.

Something had to give with both teams playing good hockey and on unbeaten streaks.

The Black Bears scored first on an Eduards Tralmaks powerplay goal about halfway through the first period.

But the Huskies answered with three goals before the period ended. Two of them were powerplay scores.

After Northeastern scored another goal in the second period to make it 4-1 Maine spent the rest of the night in catch-up mode.

A late second period goal by Emil Westerlund and an early third period goal by Brady Keeper made it 4-3. But the Bears could never get the game tied.

The Huskies scored an insurance goal in the final two minutes and increased their unbeaten streak to eight games. Maine's streak ends at nine games.

Black Bear goalie Jeremy Swayman made 33 saves in the loss.

Cayden Primeau made 30 stops for Northeastern.

UMaine is now 5-5-1 in Hockey East, 11-8-2 overall. Northeastern is battling Boston College for first place at 9-3-1 HE and 13-5-3 overall.

Game two of the weekend series tonight in Boston.
