You don't need to tell the Thursday 8:40am group of golfers about how to play the Bangor Municipal Golf Course in the first round of the 52nd Greater Bangor Open.

Shawn Warren (Maine), Jesse Larson (Vermont) and Jason Thresher (Connecticut) all have GBO wins on their resumes.

Warren scored his victory in 2008. Larson won the 2016 GBO. Thresher won the tourney last year.

This year's field also includes two other past champions - John Hickson and Eric Egloff.

For Warren, who works as a pro at Falmouth Country Club, the Greater Bangor Open is a chance to tune up his game as he preps to play in the PGA Championship in three weeks. The PGA is the fourth and final major on the tour (The Masters, U.S. Open, British Open).

After having never qualified for a PGA Tour event, Warren earned one of 20 spots available in last month's PGA Club Pro Tournament in California. There were 312 other teaching pros trying to earn a spot.

So Warren will tee it up on August 9th in St. Louis with the likes of Dustin Johnson, Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy.

But this week he tries claim another title at Bangor Muni.

NOTE: The last Maine pro to play in the PGA Championship is John Hickson (1997). He is a native of Hampden, now Bath Country Club pro. He is also in the GBO field this week. He tees off at 8:20am Thursday morning.
