Deer Isle's Sam Grindle had the lead after the first round of the U.S. Amateur Golf Qualifier. It was the second round that was the killer.

The former schoolboy champion and reigning Paul Bunyan Tourney champ shot a 5-under par 67 at The Ledges in York and led by two shots after 18 holes.

Grindle came back to shoot a 5-over par 77 on the second round for total score of 144 and that dropped him from the top spot to #3. With only two spots available for the U.S. Amateur Championship next month in Illinois, it means Grindle will be the first alternate.

Two Canadian amateurs, Joey Savoie(-4) and Eric Banks(-2) won the two qualifying spots.
