While it may sound like a ridiculous thing to say, no, not all fries are created equal. And apparently, this is Maine’s favorite fry cut.

Also, listen—we get it. Sure, not all fries are created equal, but they’re still fries, and if someone’s offering them, who are we to say no?

So, with that in mind, how do we even know which french fry cut is anyone’s favorite, let alone an entire state’s? Was there a survey we missed?

To find out how Americans prefer their fries, Talker Research surveyed 5,000 adults—100 from each state—between May 28th and June 5th, 2025. The online survey, commissioned by McCain Foods, was conducted by Talker Research to get a state-by-state breakdown of favorite french fry cuts.

Alright, now that we’ve cleared that up—how do Maine and Mainers prefer their fries? Which cut is, collectively, our favorite?

According to Talker Research and their study, ‘Here’s How America Does Fries,’ the way Maine ‘does fries’ is with the classic shoestring cut. Shoestring fries were the most popular not only in Maine, but also in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, South Carolina, Michigan, Texas, Washington, and Hawaii.

The fries considered in the survey included straight and seasoned, curly, waffle, crinkle-cut, and classic shoestring—basically, the most popular types across the country.

The study from Talker Research continues, estimating that the average American eats at least 17 pounds of fries per year, totaling over 5.6 billion pounds nationwide—roughly the weight of 155,833 school buses.
