Maine Soccer Wins Home Opener Beating Mercer 3-1 [PHOTOS]

The Maine Soccer Team won their home opener on Thursday night, August 20th, beating the Mercer Bears 3-1 to even their record at 1-1.

Maine wasted no time in scoring, as Isabella Meadows scored with just 65 seconds gone in the contest, on a cross from Sandrine Brault.

Mercer scored 5 minutes later to make the score 1-1.

Luise Reinwald scored her 1st goal of the night for Maine, heading home a corner kick from Britta Denny with 24:50 gone in the 1st Half.

The Black Bears had a golden chance to take a 3-1 lead when the Mercer goalie, Ariel Bernard was given a yellow card for a tackle in the goalie box. Maine's Teagan Atherly's penalty kick was saved and the score was 2-1 Maine at the end of the 1st Half.

The Black Bears added an insurance goal with 22:39 gone in the 2nd Half. Luise Reinwald scored her 2nd goal of the night, assisted by Abbey Thornton and Victoria Dungey.

Maine outshot Mercer 16-11. Maine had 6 shots on goal, while Mercer also had 6 shots on goal. Elena Barenberg made 5 saves for the Black Bears. Ariel Bernard had 3 saves for Mercer.

Each team had 4 corner kicks. Maine was whistled for just 2 offsides calls.

Maine is now 1-1 while Mercer is 2-1. The Black Bear are home on Sunday afternoon, August 23rd when they will host Sacred Heart at 12 Noon.
