MMA Takes Tough Road Loss In Opener
Heartbreak for Maine Maritime Academy football on opening day. Leading 21-7 with just under eight minutes to play, Maritime College (NY) came back to score 17 unanswered points to beat MMA 24-21.
18th year coach Chris McKenny has changed up the MMA offense, featuring much more of a passing game. QB Nik Moquin threw for 188 yards (12-for-24) and three TDs.
The Mariners run game was held to just 61 yards.
The Privateers of Maritime College started their fourth quarter comeback with a one yard touchdown run with 4:19 left in the game.
On the MMA's next series, Moquin had a pass picked off and seven plays later the Privateers scored again to tie the game at 21-21.
With 1:13 remaining, the MMA offense went three downs out and that set up the game winning field goal.
With two seconds on the clock, Joe Gagliardi booted a 43-yard kick for the 24-21 victory.
NOTE: MMA will play another non-conference game next week at Plymouth State (NH).
