Boats were in the water today for day one of the Penobscot Whitewater National Regatta with the downriver run as well as youth races.The first event of the day included the Open Canoe National Championships covering 9.5 miles from downtown Old Town to the Eddington Salmon Club.

Young paddlers got their chance to compete in the afternoon with the Youth Canoe National Championships.

Racing continues through Sunday with Kayaks hitting the river on Friday.
