18-year-old Cole Anderson from Camden fired a 5-under par 65 at Portland Country Club to grab the lead after round one of the Maine Amateur Golf Championship.

Playing in the first group of the day, Anderson fired six birdies and had just one bogey on his card.

Only two other players shot under par, former Husson University standout golfer Joe Alvarez and Matt Olsen, a former minor league baseball player. They are tied for second place at 2-under par.

Anderson graduated from high school last December and enrolled at Florida State University, taking classes but redshirting with the golf team in the spring.

He was Maine Amateur Tourney runner up last year and finished tied for third two years ago. Anderson is a three-time high school state champion and won the Maine State Amateur Match Play Championship last August.

NOTE: Round 2 tee times, Anderson (12pm), Alvarez (12:22pm), Olsen (12:55pm).
